Recently, we were delighted to receive a call from Karen at The Shop Next Door in Rye, East Sussex. Why? Because we adore that shop, and it’s owned (next door!) by one of our favourite luxury hotels ever; The George in Rye. Voted one of the Top Ten most Romantic Hotels in the UK by The Sunday Times. Karen had spotted Etta French and wanted to stock them in the Shop.
The hotel was recently renovated to create one of the most stunning hideaways on the south coast. The building dates from 1575 and has enviable heritage; its eclectic and contemporary design has been given to the historic fabric using a wide range of antique and modern furniture, materials and local art. The result is a comfortable blend of old and new, creating an atmosphere which is relaxed, informal and individual. At The Shop Next Door, you can take a piece of hotel living home with you. The Shop stocks all things gorgeous at The George. So, if you love the bedspreads, mohair throws or even the bespoke headboards that are in the Hotel, you can buy them here, down to the very patterns and fabrics used. If you had the best night sleep in one of the beds, or loved the Frette linen and the duvets and pillows (which are the same spec as The Savoy's) they have them too. Alongside furnishings, you can browse for presents and accessories… hence the call from Karen, to stock Etta French.
We caught up with Karen Davenport, Buyer & Manager at The Shop Next Door for a chat…
How did you discover Etta French and what made you decide to buy them for your shop and customer?
Instagram. A friend had posted a pic of a Etta French Candle and I was struck by the look and design of the candle and the gorgeous packaging too. I was intrigued and the image made me want to find out more about the product. When I discovered they were made in nearby Hastings, I contacted Kathy and got some samples in. Once I’d seen and smelt them I felt they’d be a perfect fit for our Shop.
