What goes into your candles?

Only good stuff. 100% natural plant wax and a blend of essential and fragrance oils – absolutely no nasties, no fake smelling scents, and we never test on animals. Our candles are presented in sophisticated recycled glass jars, which you can reuse, and come in beautiful recycled cardboard boxes.

Can I use this like a normal candle?

Completely. It is a beautiful fragranced candle for you to enjoy in the way you would a normal candle. Ours are just extra special as they contain a luxury treat inside. 

How long do your candles burn?

Our large (20cl) candles burn for 45/50 hours, while our small (9cl) candles burn for about 30 hours. 

What jewellery will I find inside?

There are over 100 pieces for you to discover, including beautiful rings, cute charms, dainty necklaces, and beautiful bracelets. Each piece is different, but of equal value, allowing you to curate your own stunning collection of keepsakes. The jewellery is made from a range of materials including semi-precious stones, crystals, silver, silver and gold plate - everything is hypo allogenic and free from any nickel. Jewellery is designed or sourced by our sister company Pearl & Queenie, an award winning jewellers who provide jewellery to top retailers across the UK.

How do I remove the jewellery?

To discover your beautiful jewellery surprise, snuff out the candle when the wax fully reveals your packaged treasure. Gently remove the package with tweezers, place safe and wait until cool to open. Then enjoy!

Can I choose what jewellery I have inside the candle?

Of course not, that would spoil the surprise. But rest assured, it will be beautiful. The choice you have is which beautiful fragrance to choose from. 

There’s wax on my jewellery. What should I do?

Don’t worry, sometimes wax can get inside the protective pouch and touch your jewellery. If this is the case, dip the item in a little bit of boiling water which will melt the wax off, or use an old toothbrush with a dab of toothpaste, give a gentle brush, then rinse with water.

I’ve accidentally broken my jewellery, can you fix it?

Unfortunately we are unable to help, but visit your local jeweller who will be able to mend it for you.

The chain is all crumpled on my necklace – why?

If you receive one of our pretty necklaces or bracelets as your jewellery surprise, in some cases the chain may appear crumpled. Remember that your beautiful little necklace has been wrapped up tightly for quite a while just waiting for you. The chain links may of got a little tight or twisted, so you just need to ease them out. Very gently pull your fingers along the chain, and hey presto, all sorted.

Do your mini candles contain jewellery?

No, these are purely luxury fragrance candles.

So, how do I order?

Online at our shop – it's quick and easy. Our orders are posted via Royal Mail and take between 2-5 business working days. If you place your order before 2pm (weekdays) and purchase special delivery it will arrive the next working day before 1pm excluding Saturdays and bank holidays. A signature will be required.

How do I use my candle safely?

Candles are completely safe to enjoy but should be used with care and attention so that they do not lead to an accidental fire or injury. Please be careful when burning candles: we recommend the following rules below for burning candles safely. Each candle includes lighting and care instructions on the bottom label.
  • Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch each time before burning.
  • For the initial lighting allow the candle to create a full and even burn pool across the entire candle.
  • For subsequent lightings, our recommended burn time is 3 to 4 hours max.
  • Do not leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of small children and pets.
  • Burn candle on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Always burn candles in a room with ventilation.
  • Never touch a burning candle or move a candle when the wax is liquid.
  • Remove your jewellery treasure safely by snuffing out the candle fully, removing the package with tweezers, and waiting until fully cool to open.
  • Never extinguish candles with water.
  • Make sure a candle is completely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.

The candle wax moves in the glass or appears to have cracks?

Sometimes due to very cold weather the wax may shrink and pull away from the glass, or appear to look cracked. This can in some instances cause the wax to move around in the glass. If you receive a cold candle like this, just let the candle get warm in your environment for few hours before lighting. The wax will then expand to the glass solving the issue. As we use only 100% natural plant wax, we can’t control this issue. It’s a natural occurrence. Plant wax is soft and very sensitive to temperature change – using paraffin or another toxic blended wax would help, but our environmental and your health is more important to us.

What is the frost on my candle?

The white spots on the candle are called ‘Frost’. Frosting is a natural characteristic of plant wax and it is not considered a flaw. This aspect doesn’t interact with the scent throw, burning proprieties or jewellery surprise of your candle. Having frost on your organic candle is a way of telling you that your candle is made with 100% pure plant wax and not with any nasties such as paraffin. To prevent more frosting you should keep your candle in a dry and cool place. Keep it away from direct sunlight. You will also find that small droplets sometimes appear on the top of your candle. This is often caused by temperature change and will not affect the burn quality. So it’s all perfectly normal, and natural and only caused by temperature fluctuations which only nature controls.

Can I return my candle?

We hope that you will be pleased with your order. But if you have any problems, please notify us by email, or by contacting customer services at hello@ettafrench.com within seven days of receipt of your order.

If you have changed your mind, we will only refund or exchange unused home fragrance products if they are returned to us in their original packaging and in re-saleable condition. Return postage is at buyers’ expense. Please see our T&C for our full policy here
